During our trip to South Haven, we decided to eat lunch at the Black River Tavern. This is a fun restaurant with exposed brick walls, intimate lighting, a bar, dining and stage area.
Since this was our first visit we asked our waitress, Sierra, for a menu recommendation. She offered the Perch, Italian Beef and Crab Cakes as options. We both decided to try the Italian Beef sandwich and fries along with sharing the Pretzel Braids appetizer. The pretzels were warm, soft and tasty with a nice cheddar cheese sauce for dipping. The Italian Beef sandwich was a typical “French Dip” style and quite flavorful. You can order this wet, dry or dipped and we followed Sierra’s recommendation of ordering “dry” to avoid the potential of soggy bread.
One of the fun things about our meal was trying the “Macintosh” Hard Cider from the local Black River Brewing Company. This is similar to Angry Orchard in flavor though a little less sweet.
Black River Tavern offers entertainment as well featuring live music every weekend and live comedians on Saturday nights.
The service was friendly and efficient showcasing good food, a welcoming ambience and reasonable prices. I will dine here again.
